The consistent 4.3–4.5 spread across all four bands is the kind of pattern one launch can't fake.

04How to pick your box in two steps

Step one is the scale, not the breed chart. The bands break hard at 10, 20 and 55 pounds: a 21-pound dog is a red-box dog even if he was aqua last spring, and the tube is dosed to the band, so the line matters. Weigh the dog the week you order — growing puppies and dieting seniors change bands more often than owners expect.

Step two is the calendar. The boxes differ only in how many months they hold, and the partner prices them like it: a six-dose box lands at $12.50–$13.33 per month against $17.81–$17.84 in a two-dose — the same tube, roughly a third cheaper for committing to the season. The two-dose box still earns its keep as a trial run or a late-autumn top-up, and the Medium band's $19.97 single dose exists precisely for a first patch test on a dog with touchy skin.

Multi-dog houses buy per dog, not per house. Each animal gets the tube for its own band, and a big-dog tube is never split between two small dogs — the dose is calibrated to body weight, and halving it by eye is how a month of protection quietly fails.

05Applying it so the month actually holds

Part the coat between the shoulder blades until skin shows, and squeeze the tube onto skin, not onto fur — fur wicks the dose away from where it needs to spread. On larger dogs the label marks several spots down the back; use all of them rather than one big puddle in one place.

Then leave it alone. No petting the spot, no couch wrestling, no swimming until it has dried. From 24 hours on the treatment is waterproof — baths and lake days won't shorten the month — so book the shampoo for the day before the next dose, not the day after this one.

Reapply every 30 days, same calendar day. If a month slips, don't double up: apply one dose and restart the clock from there.

06What it covers — and what it doesn't

The label covers five pests — fleas in every life stage, ticks, mosquitoes, biting flies and lice — repelled and killed on contact, most of them without a bite. That is the whole roster, and it's an honest one.

What it is not: a heartworm preventive. Repelling mosquitoes cuts down vector bites, but a dog still needs its heartworm medication — the two products answer different questions, and most vets run them side by side. It also can't treat a disease a tick has already handed over, and it does nothing for intestinal worms. And if the dog is already scratching through a full infestation, treat the bedding and the house too, or the carpet will keep restocking what the coat just cleared.

07When the season starts — and when it ends

Fleas wake when the ground does, and ticks quest on any day over roughly 40°F — which in most of the country means the season opens before the first warm weekend and closes well after the last one. Start a month before the grass greens up, and don't stop at the first frost: the deep-freeze months are the only true off-season, and across the South there aren't any.

The arithmetic favors simply staying on. A year of six-dose boxes costs about what one tick-borne infection costs to diagnose, and a lapsed October is exactly when engorged ticks ride a warm dog indoors.

08Topical drop or oral chew?

An oral chew kills a pest after it bites; this topical repels most of them before. If the goal is fewer bites — fewer chances at Lyme, Ehrlichiosis, or a tapeworm from a swallowed flea — repellency is the stronger position, and restocking never needs a prescription or a vet visit.

The chew wins in two houses: the dog who swims hard every single day, past what any waterproofing tolerates, and the dog who shares a sofa with a cat that grooms him — permethrin and cat tongues must never meet. Both of those owners should ask their vet about an oral line instead — and if the second dog turns out to be a land dog after all, the bands are right here.

09The one warning that isn't small print

K9 Advantix II is for dogs only — its permethrin-based repellent is toxic to cats, and the brand prints the warning on its own banner. In a mixed household, keep the treated dog away from the cats until the spot is completely dry, read the cat-safety guide before the first tube, and take every question about a specific animal to your veterinarian — not to the internet.
